Breaking the Pattern

The Pattern Stops With You

Have you ever reacted to something and immediately wondered where it came from? Not in a curious way, but in that unsettled, almost embarrassed way where you don't quite recognize yourself.

Maybe you shut down when someone raises their voice, even when there's nothing real to be afraid of. Perhaps you snap at someone you love and then sit with that sinking feeling afterwards, not quite understanding why it happened.

You might over-explain yourself in every conversation just to make sure nobody is upset with you, and you don't even notice you're doing it anymore.

Here's the thing: those responses feel like yours. They feel like personality, like just how you are. But most of the time, they aren't yours at all, they are subconscious programming.

Your parents were doing what their parents showed them, and their parents did the same. Generation after generation, people passing along the only tools they had, just trying to navigate life.

And so here you are, decades later, reacting from a place that was formed before you had any say in it. Before you had the language, the understanding, or the ability to question what was being modeled for you.

This isn't about blame. I want to be clear about that. Your parents were dealing with their own challenges, and so were theirs. Everyone in your ancestry was doing their best with what they had.

What this is about is recognizing that you don't have to keep carrying it forward.

Children up to about age seven have no filter for truth or falsehood. They absorb everything around them as fact, because that's how a young nervous system works. So whether the pattern came from a stressful home, a parent managing their own fear, or simply a way of being that nobody ever thought to question, a young child took it all in as truth. Sometimes those patterns formed as protection or they formed simply because that's what was modeled, and the child had no reason to believe it was anything other than normal.

That's where it starts. And here's where the challenge lives: your subconscious doesn't know the difference between then and now. It's still responding to a world that may no longer exist, still bracing against threats that are long gone.

That's why understanding your patterns isn't the same as changing them. You can read every book, talk through every memory, and still find yourself reacting the same way at the end of a hard day. That's not a failure of willpower or awareness. It's just how deeply these things are stored, and why reaching them takes something different.

The real work begins in gently, consistently helping your nervous system learn that it's safe to respond differently now. That the old threat isn't here anymore. That you are allowed to take up space, to stay calm, to choose something new.

You did not create these patterns, and you did not choose them. But you have the power to be the one who breaks and re-writes them.

I'm here when you're ready.
